Four years ago, I started learning Spanish again through an app called Duolingo. I’ve taken many Spanish lessons but fear overtakes me when I have to speak. Why is that? I’m so afraid I won’t remember the verb conjugation that I clam up. So I thought, “Okay, I’ll start from the beginning again and master every tense: past, present, future.” But I’m still struggling in this area. Why? It reminds me that I started taking college English courses to learn grammar so I could be a writer. I thought all writers were grammarians too. A bit of overkill. I got my Bachelor’s degree in English, but didn’t start writing. So I thought I’d get my Master’s in Education so I could teach while writing. Still didn’t start writing. Have you experienced anything like this? I know many people, like me, have experienced with learning a language. They still can’t speak it. What about you? What holds you back?
